Cracked iPad Screen at Summer Camp? Repair Options

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

If your child's iPad screen cracks at summer camp, cover the crack with clear tape or a protector, keep it in a case, and back it up over Wi-Fi. Book the repair after camp. Woman Wireless On The Go can quote it free and repair it at your home, whether it needs new glass or a full display.

First, keep the crack from getting worse

A cracked iPad at camp usually means it was dropped in a cabin, a bus or a mess hall, and there's no one nearby to fix it. The goal for now is simple: stop the damage spreading, protect little fingers from sharp edges, and get the data safe until the iPad is home.

  1. Check for sharp or loose glass. If pieces are lifting or the glass is flaking, stop using the iPad.
  2. Cover the crack. A strip of clear packing tape or a cheap screen protector over the cracked area holds splinters in place and keeps fingers safe. It's a temporary fix, not a repair.
  3. Put it in a case. A folio or rugged case reduces flexing, which is what makes cracks spread.
  4. Keep it dry and out of the sun. A cracked screen lets moisture and dust in more easily, and a hot car or a sunny window ledge doesn't help.
  5. Look for a swollen battery. If the screen is bulging or lifting away from the frame without an obvious impact point, power it off and stop charging it. That needs attention sooner.

Back it up before anything else

Camp iPads are full of photos, videos and messages your child will want to keep. If the screen still responds, back up as soon as there's Wi-Fi:

  • Go to Settings › [your name] › iCloud › iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now.
  • Or connect the iPad to a computer and back it up in Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app or iTunes (Windows).
  • Make sure Find My is on, and that you know the passcode and the Apple Account password. A technician may need the passcode to test the screen after the repair.

If parts of the screen don't respond to touch, connecting to a computer you've used with the iPad before is often still possible. Our post on backing up before a screen repair covers the same steps for iPhone, and they carry over well.

Glass-only vs laminated screens: why your model matters

iPad screens are built in two different ways, and that changes the repair.

Screen typeTypical modelsWhat a crack usually means
Separate glass layer (non-laminated)Standard iPad modelsThe touch glass can often be replaced on its own if the display underneath is fine.
Laminated displayiPad Air, iPad mini, iPad ProThe glass is fused to the display, so the whole display assembly is replaced.

Not sure which you have? Go to Settings › General › About and check the Model Name. A quick test helps too: if the picture is perfect and only the glass is cracked, the display is probably fine. If you see lines, black blotches, colour bleeding or a dead touch area, the display itself is damaged.

Repair at camp or after camp?

For most families, the sensible plan is to tape it, back it up and book the repair once your child is home. A few reasons:

  • You can see the damage yourself and send a clear photo for a quote.
  • You'll know the model and passcode, which speeds up testing.
  • Many camps limit device use anyway, so a taped screen for the rest of the session is usually fine.

The exception is a screen with loose glass, a bulging case or a display that won't come on at all. In that case, ask the camp to keep it powered off and stored safely until pickup.

Check coverage before paying

If the iPad has AppleCare+, or your home insurance or credit card includes device protection, check what's covered before you book. Some school or camp iPads are owned by an organization, so check whose it is before arranging any repair.

Preventing a repeat next summer

  • A rugged case with a raised edge or a built-in screen cover.
  • A tempered glass screen protector.
  • A padded sleeve inside a backpack, away from water bottles and shoes.
  • A simple rule: the iPad stays on a table, not on a bunk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put tape on a cracked iPad screen?

Yes, as a short-term measure. Clear packing tape or a screen protector over the crack holds splinters in place and protects fingers. It won't stop the crack spreading forever, and you should stop using the iPad if glass is loose or flaking.

Is it just the glass or the whole screen on my iPad?

It depends on the model. Standard iPads usually have a separate glass layer that can be replaced alone if the display is fine. iPad Air, mini and Pro have laminated displays, so the whole display assembly is replaced.

Should I fix my child's iPad at camp or wait until they're home?

Usually wait. Cover the crack, keep the iPad in a case, back it up over Wi-Fi and book the repair once it's home. If glass is loose or the screen is bulging, ask the camp to keep it switched off until pickup.
