Why do a check-up in the fall?
Winter is hard on phones. Cold temporarily reduces how much power a battery can deliver, so a battery that's merely tired in September can start shutting the phone off in January. Icy sidewalks mean more drops, and gloves mean more fumbles. Catching problems now means you deal with them on your schedule, not on a frozen bus platform.
This is a health check, not a deep clean. You're looking for readings and warning signs, then deciding what needs attention. Work through the list in order and jot down anything that fails.
The 10-minute checklist
1. Read your battery health
- iPhone: open Settings › Battery › Battery Health and look at Maximum Capacity and the Peak Performance Capability message. On iPhone 15 and later, the cycle count is listed in Settings › General › About.
- Google Pixel: newer models show a battery health page in the Battery section of Settings.
- Samsung Galaxy: the Samsung Members app includes diagnostics with a battery status check.
Pass: health is good and the phone gets through your day. Flag it: iPhone shows a service message or a Maximum Capacity under 80%, the phone shuts down unexpectedly, or the battery barely lasts until lunch. Our phone battery guide explains the readings in more detail.
2. Look for a swollen battery
Lay the phone flat on a table. Check that it doesn't rock, that the screen isn't lifting at an edge and that the back isn't bulging. Flag it immediately if you see any of these. Stop charging and don't press on it.
3. Confirm your backup actually ran
Open your backup settings (iCloud Backup on iPhone, Google or Samsung backup on Android) and check the date of the last successful backup. Pass: within the last few days. Flag it: weeks ago, or never. Fix this before winter, since a drop on ice is the worst time to discover you have no backup.
4. Install updates
Check for a system update and update your apps. Updates carry security fixes and sometimes battery and connectivity improvements. Do this while connected to Wi-Fi and a charger.
5. Check free storage
Glance at the storage screen in Settings. A phone with almost no free space can't install updates or complete backups. If you're close to full, plan a clear-out this week.
6. Inspect the charging port
Shine a light into the port. You're looking for packed lint, debris or green or white residue that could mean corrosion. Plug in your cable: it should click in firmly and charge without wiggling. If lint is visible, a soft, clean, dry brush can lift loose debris. Never use a pin, paperclip or anything metal.
7. Check the screen protector
Run a fingertip around the edges. Chipped corners, lifting edges and cracks spreading across the protector mean it's done its job and should be replaced. A cracked protector won't absorb the next impact.
8. Check the case
Take the phone out of its case. Look for split corners, a stretched fit or a missing raised lip around the screen and camera. With icy months ahead, a case with good grip and protected corners is worth more than a slim one.
9. Test the hardware quickly
- Take a photo with each rear lens and the front camera.
- Play a video through the speaker and make a short test call.
- Press every button and test Face ID or the fingerprint sensor.
10. Turn on safety features
- Make sure Find My (iPhone) or Find My Device (Android) is on.
- Fill in your emergency medical information and emergency contacts, which first responders can view without unlocking the phone.
What to do with the results
| If you found… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Low battery health or random shutdowns | Get a battery replacement quote before the cold sets in. |
| A swollen battery | Stop charging, keep it away from heat and arrange a repair promptly. |
| No recent backup | Run one tonight on Wi-Fi. |
| Loose or unreliable charging | Clean gently; if it persists, the port may need repair. |
| Cracked protector or worn case | Replace them now, before ice season. |

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my phone battery needs replacing before winter?
Check the battery health reading in Settings or your phone's diagnostics app. Unexpected shutdowns, a service message on iPhone or a battery that barely lasts half a day are strong signs. Cold makes a worn battery behave worse, so fall is a good time to replace it.
How often should I do a phone check-up?
Twice a year works well for most people, for example in the fall before winter and in the spring. Also do one after any significant drop or liquid exposure, even if the phone seems fine, so you catch hidden damage early.
Should I replace a cracked screen protector?
Yes. A cracked or chipped protector has already absorbed an impact and won't protect the screen as well next time. Edges that lift also let dust in underneath. Replacing it is a simple way to protect the actual display.
