Game Console Storage Full? Upgrades and Clean-Up

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

When your game console storage is full, start by deleting unused games, add-ons and video clips, then expand: an M.2 SSD for PS5, an expansion card for Xbox Series X|S, or a microSD card for Switch. Woman Wireless On The Go can help with console problems at your home.

Why console storage fills up so quickly

Modern games are big, and they keep getting bigger with every patch, expansion and texture pack. Add a few large online games that update constantly, a library of recorded clips and screenshots, and the console's built-in drive fills up far sooner than most people expect.

Even buying games on disc doesn't help much. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, disc games still install to the console's storage, with the disc mainly acting as a licence. So when the "storage full" warning appears, you have two choices: clear space, or add more.

Start with a clean-up

Before you buy anything, see what's actually using the space. Both PlayStation and Xbox show your installed games and apps sorted by size in their storage settings.

  1. Delete games you've finished or haven't touched in months. You can re-download digital games later from your library, and disc games can be reinstalled from the disc, though large updates may need to download again.
  2. Check your saves first. Deleting a game usually leaves its save data, but it's worth confirming your saves are backed up to the cloud or another drive before removing anything you care about.
  3. Remove add-ons you don't use. Some games let you uninstall individual parts, like a campaign you've finished or high-resolution packs, while keeping multiplayer.
  4. Clear out captures. Recorded video clips add up quickly. Delete old ones or move the keepers to a USB drive or your phone.
  5. Look for leftover data. Demos, betas and apps you no longer use can quietly take up room.

PlayStation 5: M.2 expansion and USB drives

Every PS5 model has a slot inside for an additional M.2 NVMe SSD. A compatible drive becomes fast extended storage, and you can play PS5 games directly from it, just like the built-in drive.

Before buying an M.2 drive, check Sony's current requirements for your model. They cover the interface (PCIe Gen4 NVMe), supported capacities, the drive's physical size and the need for cooling. Sony recommends a heatsink or similar cooling, which some drives include and some don't.

A USB external drive is the other option. It's simpler to set up but works differently:

  • PS4 games can be played straight from a USB drive.
  • PS5 games can be stored on it, but must be copied back to internal or M.2 storage to play.

Many people use both: an M.2 drive for current PS5 games and a USB drive as a cheaper "parking lot" for games they'll return to later. Copying a game back from a USB drive is often quicker than downloading it again.

Xbox Series X and Series S: expansion cards and USB drives

The Xbox Series X|S uses a proprietary Storage Expansion Card that plugs into a dedicated slot on the back. No tools, no opening the console. It behaves like the internal drive, so you can play games optimized for Series X|S directly from it.

Standard USB 3.1 or newer external drives also work, with a limit similar to PlayStation:

  • Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can be played from a USB drive.
  • Games optimized for Series X|S can be stored on a USB drive but need to be moved to internal storage or an expansion card to play.

Nintendo Switch: microSD cards

The original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED expand storage with a standard microSD card. The Nintendo Switch 2 is different: it only accepts microSD Express cards for game storage, so a regular microSD card from an older Switch won't do the job. Check the card type carefully before buying.

Installing an M.2 drive in a PS5: what's involved

Installing an M.2 drive is a manageable job, but it does mean opening the console. The general process:

  1. Fully power off the PS5 (not rest mode) and unplug every cable.
  2. Remove the cover panel according to your model's instructions.
  3. Unscrew the expansion slot cover, fit the drive and secure it with the screw and spacer.
  4. Replace the covers, reconnect and power on. The PS5 will prompt you to format the drive.

Work on a clean, flat surface, touch a grounded metal object first to discharge static, and don't force anything. If you'd rather not open the console yourself, or if your PS5 has other issues like overheating or a noisy fan, ask about it when you request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play PS5 games from an external USB drive?

No. You can store PS5 games on a USB drive, but they must be copied back to the internal drive or an M.2 SSD to play. PS4 games can be played directly from a USB drive.

Will deleting a game delete my saves?

Usually not. Deleting a game normally leaves its save data in place, but confirm your saves are backed up to the cloud or another drive before deleting anything you care about.

Does buying games on disc save storage space?

Not much. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, disc games still install to the console's storage. The disc mainly confirms you own the game, and updates still download.
