First, figure out what "won't turn on" means
Before trying fixes, notice exactly what happens when you press the power button. It tells you where to look.
- No light, no sound, nothing at all: start with power. The outlet, cable or the console's internal power supply is the likely suspect.
- A light comes on, then it shuts off: this can point to overheating, a power supply problem or a hardware fault.
- The console seems on (lights, fan noise) but the TV shows nothing: that's a display or HDMI problem, not a power problem. Check the TV input and HDMI cable first.
- It starts but freezes or loops on the logo: that's usually software, and safe mode is your friend.
Quick checks you can do in a few minutes
- Test the outlet. Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet. Power bars get switched off, overloaded or tripped, especially when the holiday lights go up.
- Plug straight into the wall. Skip the power bar or extension cord for a test. If the console works this way, the bar is the problem.
- Reseat the power cable at both ends. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles use a detachable power cord that can work loose at the back of the console. Push it in firmly.
- Try another cable if you have one. The standard two-prong cord used by many consoles is common on other electronics. If yours is damaged, kinked or chewed by a pet, swap it.
- Do a full power cycle. Unplug the console from the wall, leave it for a couple of minutes, plug it back in and press the power button on the console itself (not the controller).
What the lights are telling you
Every console uses its light differently, and the exact meaning changes between models, so check your manufacturer's support pages for a full chart. In general terms:
- A steady light that turns on and stays on usually means the console has power and is starting up or in rest/standby mode.
- A light that blinks and then shuts off often means the console detected a problem during startup, such as heat or a power fault.
- No light at all, after you've confirmed the outlet and cable are good, often points to the internal power supply or another hardware fault.
On a PlayStation 5, rest mode shows an orange light. If it's stuck in rest mode, hold the power button on the console until you hear one beep and it fully turns off, then try starting it normally.
Rule out overheating
Consoles protect themselves by shutting down when they get too hot, and some won't start again until they cool. Holiday setups are often the culprit: a console squeezed into a cabinet, stacked under a cable box, or pushed against a wall behind the tree.
- Give it open space on all sides, especially around the vents.
- Keep it off carpet and away from heaters and fireplaces.
- With the console unplugged, gently clear dust from the outside of the vents with short bursts of compressed air or a soft brush.
- Let it sit unplugged at room temperature for a while, then try again.
If your console runs loud and hot every time you play, the inside may need a proper cleaning. That's a job to book rather than take apart yourself.
Try safe mode for software problems
If the console powers on but won't finish starting, a safe mode or troubleshooting menu can repair it without opening anything.
PlayStation 5
With the console fully off, press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep. Connect your controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. From the menu you can restart, rebuild the database or reinstall system software. Choose options carefully: resetting the console or reinstalling with a full reset erases your data.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox has a Startup Troubleshooter you open by holding specific buttons on the console while turning it on (Pair, plus Eject on disc models). It lets you restart, reset or update offline. Microsoft's support site lists the exact steps for your model.
Nintendo Switch
If the screen stays black, the battery may be completely drained. Charge it with the Nintendo AC adapter for a while before trying again. If it's on but frozen, hold the power button until it turns off, then press it once to restart.
Signs it's a hardware problem
- Nothing happens even with a known-good outlet and cable.
- You smell burning or hear a pop or click from inside.
- It stopped working after a power outage, storm or spill.
- It shuts off within moments every time, even when cool.
Stop using it if you notice a burning smell. Don't open the power supply: it can hold a charge even when unplugged.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my PS5 turn on but the light blinks?
A blinking light that then shuts off usually means the console found a problem while starting, such as overheating or a power fault. Check ventilation, power cycle it, then try safe mode. If it keeps happening, book a repair.
How do I reset a console that won't turn on?
Unplug it from the wall, wait a couple of minutes, plug it back in and press the power button on the console itself. If it powers on but won't start properly, use safe mode or the startup troubleshooter.
Can a power surge break a game console?
Yes. A surge or outage can damage the console's internal power supply. If it stopped working right after a storm or outage and the outlet and cable test fine, have it checked by a technician.
