Google Pixel Screen Repair: What to Expect

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

A Google Pixel screen repair replaces the whole display assembly, keeps your data in place and ends with a fingerprint sensor calibration and re-enrolment, since most Pixels read fingerprints through the screen. Find your model in Settings, back up first, and test everything together. Woman Wireless On The Go does it at your home.

What a Pixel screen repair involves

A Google Pixel screen replacement swaps the whole display assembly: the glass, the touch layer and the OLED panel underneath, which are bonded together. On most Pixel models that panel also sits over the fingerprint sensor, which is why a Pixel screen repair has one extra step that many other phones don't. Here's what to expect, start to finish.

Step 1: Find your exact model

Pixel models look alike, and screens aren't interchangeable between them. A Pixel 8 and a Pixel 8 Pro, or a Pixel 7a and a Pixel 7, all need different parts. To find yours:

  • Open Settings › About phone. The model name is listed near the top.
  • If the screen is too broken to read, check the original box, or the device list in your Google Account on another device.
  • For a foldable Pixel, say whether the damage is on the inner screen, the outer screen or both. They're separate repairs.

Step 2: Back up if you can

A screen replacement doesn't erase your phone, and your apps, photos and settings normally stay exactly as they were. Still, any repair is a good reason to make sure your data is safe. If the screen still works:

  1. Open Settings and search for Backup.
  2. Make sure Google backup is on, then tap Back up now.
  3. Check that Google Photos has finished backing up, if you use it.
  4. Write down or save any two-factor backup codes for important accounts.

If the touch layer is dead but the display still shows an image, you may be able to plug in a USB-C keyboard or mouse to navigate. If the phone won't show anything, go ahead with the repair and back up afterwards.

Step 3: Get a quote that covers everything

Send your model and a clear photo of the damage, front and back. Mention anything else you've noticed, such as cracked back glass, a bent frame, lines on the screen or a battery that drains fast. A swollen battery can push the screen out from the inside, and if that's the cause, it needs to be dealt with at the same time.

Replacement screens come in different grades, which can differ in brightness and colour accuracy. Ask your technician to explain the options for your model so you can choose with the details in front of you.

Step 4: The fingerprint sensor step

Most recent Pixel phones use an under-display fingerprint sensor. Because it reads your fingerprint through the screen, the sensor needs to be calibrated to the new display after a screen replacement. Without that step, fingerprint unlock can be unreliable or stop working.

After calibration, delete your old fingerprints and enrol them again. You'll find this in Settings › Security & privacy, under the device unlock options. Enrolling fresh prints on the new screen gives you the most reliable unlock. Keep your PIN or password handy, because you'll need it to make changes.

Face Unlock on models that have it uses the front camera and usually works as before.

Step 5: Test before the technician leaves

A good repair ends with a proper test, done together. Here's a checklist worth running through:

  • Swipe and tap across every edge and corner, including the keyboard's outer letters
  • Brightness slider and auto-brightness
  • Smooth Display or high refresh rate, if your model has it
  • Fingerprint unlock, several times, at different angles
  • Front camera and Face Unlock
  • A test call: earpiece sound, and the screen turning off when held to your ear
  • Auto-rotate and notifications
  • Charging

If anything feels off, say so before the visit wraps up so it can be checked on the spot.

After the repair

Put a screen protector on the new display if you use one, and make sure your case has a raised lip around the screen. If you use a thick glass protector, check that fingerprint unlock still reads reliably with it on; some protectors can interfere with under-display sensors.

Why an at-home visit suits a Pixel repair

With a repair done in front of you, your phone never leaves your sight, and the fingerprint setup and testing happen while the technician is still there to help. There's no shipping, no drop-off and no second trip. See our walk-in shop vs mobile technician comparison for more on the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my data when my Pixel screen is replaced?

A screen replacement doesn't erase your phone, so apps, photos and settings normally stay as they were. It's still wise to turn on Google backup and tap Back up now beforehand if the screen works well enough.

Why doesn't my Pixel fingerprint work after a screen replacement?

Most recent Pixels read fingerprints through the display, so the sensor needs calibrating to the new screen. After that, delete your old fingerprints and enrol them again in Security and privacy settings for the most reliable unlock.

How do I find my Google Pixel model?

Open Settings and tap About phone; the model name is near the top. If the screen is unreadable, check the original box or the devices listed in your Google Account from another phone or computer.
