How to Back Up WhatsApp Before a Repair or New Phone

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

To back up WhatsApp, open WhatsApp's Settings, tap Chats, then Chat Backup, and tap Back Up Now. iPhones save to iCloud and Android phones save to Google Drive. Do it before any repair or upgrade. Woman Wireless On The Go recommends a fresh backup even though most repairs leave your data untouched.

Why WhatsApp needs its own backup

WhatsApp doesn't keep your chat history on its servers once messages are delivered. The copies live on the phones in the conversation. If your phone is wiped, replaced or simply won't turn on, your chats go with it unless a WhatsApp backup exists.

Don't assume your general phone backup has you covered. When you reinstall WhatsApp and verify your number, it looks for its own chat backup in iCloud or Google Drive. That's the backup worth checking before any repair or upgrade.

Back up WhatsApp on an iPhone (iCloud)

  1. Make sure you're signed in to iCloud, iCloud Drive is on, and WhatsApp is allowed to use iCloud (Settings › [your name] › iCloud).
  2. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings › Chats › Chat Backup.
  3. Decide whether to include videos. They make the backup much larger.
  4. Tap Back Up Now and keep WhatsApp open on Wi-Fi until it finishes.
  5. Set Auto Backup to daily or weekly so you're never far behind.

When it's done, check that the "Last Backup" date and size have updated. If your iCloud storage is full, the backup will quietly fail, so free up space or leave videos out.

Back up WhatsApp on Android (Google Drive)

  1. In WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings › Chats › Chat backup.
  2. Choose the Google account you want to back up to.
  3. Decide whether to include videos.
  4. Tap Back up. Wi-Fi and a charger make it go smoother.
  5. Set an automatic backup frequency.

WhatsApp backups on Android now count toward your Google account storage, which is shared with Gmail and Google Photos. If that space is nearly full, the backup can stall. Android also keeps a local backup on the phone's own storage, but that copy won't help if the phone is the thing that's broken.

Turn on end-to-end encrypted backup (and save the key)

Your messages are end-to-end encrypted while they travel. A standard backup sitting in iCloud or Google Drive, though, is protected by that cloud account's security, not by WhatsApp's encryption. For extra privacy, turn on End-to-end encrypted backup on the same Chat Backup screen.

You'll protect it with either a password you choose or a 64-digit encryption key. Both work. The catch is what happens if you lose them.

Write it down somewhere safe. If you forget the password or lose the key, neither WhatsApp nor a repair technician can open the backup. Keep it in a password manager or on paper at home, not only on the phone you're backing up.

Switching between iPhone and Android

Cloud backups don't cross platforms. An iCloud backup can't be restored on an Android phone, and a Google Drive backup can't be restored on an iPhone. To switch, you move chats directly instead:

  • Android to iPhone: use Apple's Move to iOS app while setting up the new iPhone. It only works during first-time set-up, so the iPhone has to be new or reset to factory settings.
  • iPhone to Android: the transfer happens during the new phone's set-up, usually with a cable between the two phones or through the phone maker's transfer tool, such as Samsung Smart Switch. Follow the on-screen prompts on both phones.
  • Same platform, new phone: WhatsApp's Transfer chats option (under Settings › Chats) moves your history phone to phone over Wi-Fi, without waiting on the cloud.

Whichever route you take, use the same phone number on the new phone. WhatsApp ties your history to that number, and a different number won't find your backup.

Before a repair: a quick checklist

  • Run a manual backup today instead of relying on last week's automatic one.
  • Confirm the backup date and size changed.
  • Have your encrypted backup password or key handy if you use one.
  • Know your Apple Account or Google password, since you need it to restore.
  • Back up photos and the rest of the phone too. Our post on backing up an iPhone before a screen repair covers the whole device.

Most screen, battery and charging port repairs don't touch your data. Still, a phone that has taken a hard fall or a soaking can have hidden damage, and a fresh backup is the only real safety net.

If the phone won't turn on or the screen is black

You can't start a new backup on a phone you can't use. Check whether an older automatic backup exists: the Backups section of Google Drive or your iCloud storage settings on another device will show what's there.

If there's nothing recent, getting the phone working again is usually the way to rescue your chats. A screen or charging port repair is often enough to let you sign in and run a fresh backup. See our cell phone repair page for what can be fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp back up automatically?

Only if Auto Backup is turned on. Check WhatsApp's Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, and choose daily, weekly or monthly. Before a repair or upgrade, run a manual backup anyway so you don't lose the most recent messages.

Can I restore a WhatsApp backup from iCloud on an Android phone?

No. iCloud backups only restore to iPhones and Google Drive backups only restore to Android. To switch platforms, use a direct transfer during the new phone's set-up, such as Move to iOS or the Android set-up transfer.

What happens if I forget my WhatsApp backup password?

If your backup is end-to-end encrypted and you lose the password or 64-digit key, the backup can't be opened by you, WhatsApp or anyone else. If your phone still works, check WhatsApp's backup settings for a way to change the password, then back up again.
