How to Find Your Phone's Model Number (iPhone, Samsung, Pixel, iPad)

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

To find your phone's model number, open Settings and go to About: on iPhone and iPad it's under General, About, and on Samsung and Pixel it's under About phone. Woman Wireless On The Go asks for this when you request a quote, because many models look alike but use different parts.

Why the exact model matters

Phones from the same family often look almost identical but use different parts. A Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 FE and S24 Ultra each take a different screen. An iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus differ in size, and the Pro models differ again in camera layout. Pixel "a" models are not the same as the standard Pixel of the same number, and Motorola reuses names like moto g power from year to year with different hardware inside.

When you include the exact model in a repair request, the technician can confirm the right part is available and give an accurate quote before she comes to you. Getting it wrong can mean a second trip, which nobody wants.

Model name vs model number

There are two things to look for:

  • Model name is the marketing name, like "iPhone 14 Pro" or "Galaxy A35 5G". This is usually enough for a quote.
  • Model number is the code that identifies the exact hardware variant, like an "A" number on Apple devices or an "SM-" code on Samsung. It's useful when names are confusing or similar models exist.

iPhone

  1. Open Settings › General › About.
  2. Look at Model Name for the marketing name.
  3. Next to Model Number you'll see a part number that usually starts with a letter like M. Tap it once and it switches to the model number, which starts with A followed by four digits.

If the iPhone has a SIM tray, recent models also have the A number printed inside the SIM slot. You'd need to remove the tray and look into the slot with good light. Older iPhones had it printed in small text on the back.

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings › About phone.
  2. You'll see Model name (for example, Galaxy S23) and Model number, which starts with SM- followed by letters and digits.

The letters at the end of a Samsung model number point to the region the phone was made for. Galaxy phones sold in Canada usually end in W. If yours ends in something else, it was probably bought abroad, which is worth mentioning because a few parts can differ between regional versions.

Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings › About phone.
  2. Find Model, which shows the name, such as Pixel 8a.

For Pixels, the name is usually all a technician needs. Just be precise about letters like "a", "Pro", "Pro XL" or "Pro Fold", since each is a different phone with different parts. The hardware model code also appears on the original box and in the phone's regulatory information.

iPad

  1. Open Settings › General › About.
  2. Check Model Name, then tap Model Number to see the A number.

iPads are the trickiest, because many generations look alike. "iPad" with no other word could be any of several generations, and the iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pro each have their own lineup. The A number is also engraved in small print on the back of most iPads, so you can read it even when the screen is broken.

If your phone won't turn on or the screen is black

You can still find the model without using the phone:

  • The original box. The label on the box lists the model name and usually the model number.
  • Your receipt or carrier account. Your carrier's online account or your order confirmation email typically lists the device.
  • Your Apple Account. On another Apple device signed in to the same account, the device list under your name in Settings shows each device and its model.
  • Your Google Account. The devices section of your Google Account security settings lists Android phones you've signed in on.
  • Photos of the phone. If you're not sure, a clear photo of the back and the camera bump helps a technician identify most models.

What to include in a repair request

Send this along with your request and you'll get a quote that matches your exact phone:

  • Model name, plus model number if you have it
  • What's wrong, in plain words (cracked screen, won't charge, no sound)
  • A photo of the damage
  • Anything else you've noticed, like a drop, a spill or a bent corner
  • Your general area, so we can confirm we cover it
