Not just iPhones and Galaxies
Motorola and OnePlus phones are popular in Canada, especially Motorola's moto g line, which is often what carriers offer as an affordable option. When one of these phones breaks, people sometimes assume it can't be fixed or isn't worth fixing. In most cases, it can be.
The main difference from fixing an iPhone or a Galaxy is parts. Both brands release many models with similar names, and part availability varies more from model to model. That's why getting the exact model right, and confirming the part before booking, matters so much.
Common Motorola repairs
moto g series
The moto g family includes names like moto g power, moto g stylus, moto g play and moto g 5G, and Motorola refreshes many of them every year under the same name. Common repairs:
- Cracked screens. The most frequent job. Some moto g models use LCD screens and others use OLED, which affects the part and the quote.
- Batteries. These phones are known for long battery life when new, so a phone that suddenly struggles to get through the day usually has a worn battery. A lifting back cover can mean the battery is swelling. Stop charging it and get it checked.
- USB-C charging ports. Lint, wear and cables yanked out at an angle all take a toll. Charging that only works at a certain angle is a classic port symptom.
- Back covers. Many moto g models have plastic or textured backs that crack or separate rather than shatter.
motorola edge
The edge line uses OLED displays, and some models have curved edges. Curved screens take more care to replace, so the exact model makes a real difference to the quote. Batteries, ports and rear cameras are the other common repairs.
motorola razr
The razr is a flip phone with a folding inner screen and a separate outer screen. The outer screen and battery are typical repairs. The folding inner screen is a more involved job, and part availability varies by model, so expect the technician to confirm the part before anything is scheduled.
Common OnePlus repairs
OnePlus sells numbered flagship phones and the more affordable Nord line. Typical repairs:
- Screens. Most OnePlus phones use OLED displays, and some flagships have curved edges. Cracked glass, lines, black spots or touch problems usually mean a display replacement.
- Batteries. Fast-draining batteries, sudden shutdowns and swelling are the signs to watch for.
- USB-C charging ports. If a cable feels loose or charging cuts in and out, the port may need cleaning or replacing.
- Back glass. Many OnePlus flagships have glass backs that can crack in a drop.
- Cameras. A cracked camera lens cover or a camera that won't focus can often be fixed separately from the screen.
Find your exact model first
Because model names repeat and refresh, the exact model is the most useful thing you can send with your request.
- Motorola: open Settings › About phone. The model name is listed there and often includes a year, such as a moto g power from a specific year. Different years are different phones with different parts.
- OnePlus: open Settings › About device and look for the device name and model number.
- If the phone won't turn on: check the original box, your receipt or your carrier account. A photo of the back of the phone and its camera layout also helps identify it.
Why parts are confirmed before booking
With these brands, some parts are easy to find and others, particularly for older, less common or foldable models, take more work to source. Rather than show up and discover the wrong part, here's how a request works:
- You send your model, what's wrong and a photo.
- The technician checks that the correct part is available for your exact model.
- You get a free quote before any work starts.
- Once you agree, the exact time is confirmed by phone or WhatsApp.
- She comes to you, does the repair on the spot and tests it with you.
Worth knowing: support periods for software updates vary a lot between Motorola and OnePlus models. If your phone has stopped getting security updates, factor that in before deciding on a bigger repair.
Before your repair
- Back up the phone to your Google account from the Backup section in Settings.
- Remove a microSD card if your model has one.
- Note anything else that's not working, so the quote covers everything.
