Samsung Galaxy Screen Repair: What to Know Before You Book

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

Before booking a Samsung Galaxy screen repair, find your model in Settings under About phone, note whether your screen is flat, curved or folding, back up your data and have your PIN ready to re-register your fingerprint. Woman Wireless On The Go gives a free quote and does the repair where you are.

Find your exact Galaxy model first

"Samsung Galaxy" covers dozens of phones with very different screens. The easiest way to get an accurate quote is to know your exact model before you reach out.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap About phone.
  3. Note the Model name (for example, Galaxy S24 or Galaxy A35) and the Model number, which starts with SM-.

Phones sold in Canada usually have a model number ending in W. If the screen is too damaged to read, the model is often printed on the original box, or you can find it in your carrier account. Send both the name and the number when you ask for a quote, plus a clear photo of the damage.

Flat, curved or folding: why it matters

The shape of your screen affects which parts are needed and how the repair is done.

  • Flat screens are found on most current Galaxy A and S models. They're the most common type to replace.
  • Curved-edge screens were used on many older Galaxy S, Note and Ultra models. The glass wraps around the sides, so it's more exposed in a drop and the panel itself is more involved to fit.
  • Folding screens on Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold models have a flexible inner display plus a separate cover screen. Tell your technician which one is damaged, as they're entirely different repairs.

On many Galaxy phones, the glass and the display underneath are bonded together. Even if only the glass looks cracked, the replacement is usually the whole display assembly, not just a sheet of glass.

Check what else might be damaged

A drop rarely damages just one thing. Look over the phone and note anything else so your quote covers it:

  • Black spots, coloured lines or patches that spread over time
  • Parts of the screen that don't respond to touch, or "ghost" taps
  • Cracked back glass or a cracked camera lens cover
  • A bent frame, or a screen that's lifting away from the body
  • Trouble charging, or the phone getting hot in one spot

A lifting screen can be a sign of a swollen battery. If you see that, stop charging the phone and mention it right away.

Back up before the repair

A screen replacement doesn't normally touch your data, but it's always wise to have a recent backup before any repair. If your screen still works well enough to use:

  • Run a backup with Samsung Cloud or your Google account from Settings › Accounts and backup.
  • Make sure Google Photos or another photo service has finished uploading.
  • Back up WhatsApp chats from inside the WhatsApp app.

Recent Galaxy phones also offer Maintenance mode, usually found under Settings › Battery and device care. It keeps your personal data locked away while someone else is using the phone, and you turn it off afterwards with your PIN or pattern. Our Samsung Galaxy repair guide covers backup and preparation in more detail.

Plan to re-register your fingerprint

Galaxy S and Note models from recent years, and many A models, read your fingerprint through the display. After a screen replacement, it's normal to need to delete your saved fingerprints and add them again so the sensor recognizes you through the new panel.

  1. Go to Settings › Security and privacy › Biometrics › Fingerprints (the wording varies a little by One UI version).
  2. Confirm your PIN, pattern or password.
  3. Remove the old fingerprints and register them again.

That means you'll need your PIN or password handy. If you only ever unlock with your fingerprint, check you remember it before the visit. Screen protectors can also affect in-display readers, so if you add one afterwards, choose one listed as compatible with your model and re-register your prints after fitting it.

Folding Galaxy phones and some A models have the fingerprint reader in the side power button instead. Those aren't affected by a screen change.

What gets tested after the repair

A screen isn't finished just because the phone lights up. Before you sign off, the new display should be checked with you:

  • Touch across the whole screen, including the edges and corners
  • Brightness, auto-brightness and an even display with no tint or patches
  • The fingerprint reader, after you re-register
  • The front camera and the earpiece speaker on a call
  • The proximity sensor, so the screen turns off when you hold the phone to your ear
  • S Pen input on Ultra models that support it

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Samsung model number?

Open Settings, scroll down and tap About phone. You'll see the Model name and the Model number, which starts with SM-. If the screen won't display, check the original box or your carrier account.

Will my fingerprint work after a Samsung screen replacement?

Usually, yes, but you'll often need to delete and re-register your fingerprints so the in-display sensor reads them through the new screen. Have your PIN, pattern or password ready, since you'll need it to change fingerprint settings.

Will I lose my data if my Galaxy screen is replaced?

A screen replacement doesn't normally affect your data, but back up first in case anything else turns up during the repair. Use Samsung Cloud or your Google account, and back up WhatsApp separately inside the app.
