It's usually a feature, not a fault
Lithium-ion batteries wear faster when they sit at a full charge for long stretches, and faster still when they're warm. Apple builds several protections into iOS that hold the charge at 80% to slow that wear.
So if your iPhone stops at 80%, the cause is almost always one of three things: Optimized Battery Charging, a charge limit you (or someone) set, or heat. Here's how to tell which one, and when it really is a problem.
Reason 1: Optimized Battery Charging
Optimized Battery Charging learns your daily routine. If you usually plug in at bedtime and unplug in the morning, your iPhone charges to 80%, waits, then finishes charging shortly before you normally unplug.
You'll often see a lock screen notification saying charging is on hold and when it will be finished. If you need a full charge right now, touch and hold that notification and choose to charge now.
Clues that this is your reason:
- It happens overnight or at places where you charge regularly, like home or work.
- The phone is at 100% by the time you'd normally grab it.
- When you charge at an unusual time or place, it goes straight to full.
Reason 2: The charge limit on iPhone 15 and later
iPhone 15 and newer models let you set a hard ceiling on charging. Depending on your iOS version, you'll see an 80% Limit option or a choice of limits from 80% to 100% in steps.
With the limit at 80%, the phone stops there every time, wherever you charge. Apple notes that iPhone will occasionally charge all the way to 100% even with the limit on, to keep the battery percentage reading accurate. That's normal too.
Reason 3: Heat
If the battery gets too warm while charging, iOS can pause charging around 80% until it cools down. You may see a message that charging is on hold.
Common triggers:
- Wireless charging in a thick case
- Charging on a sunny dashboard or windowsill
- Gaming, video calls or GPS navigation while plugged in
- Charging under a pillow or on a bed
Unplug, take off the case and move the phone somewhere cool and out of the sun. Never put it in the fridge or freezer; sudden cold can cause condensation inside.
How to check and change your settings
- Open Settings and tap Battery.
- Look for Charging, or Battery Health & Charging on older versions of iOS.
- On iPhone 15 and later, pick your charge limit or turn optimization off. On older models, switch Optimized Battery Charging on or off.
For most people, leaving the protection on is the right call. If you have a long day ahead with no charger, switch it off for one night or raise the limit, then set it back.
Setting or problem? A quick comparison
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Holds at 80% overnight, reaches 100% by morning | Optimized Battery Charging working normally |
| Always stops at exactly 80%, anywhere (iPhone 15 or later) | 80% charge limit is on |
| Stops around 80% only when the phone feels warm | Heat protection |
| Stops at random levels, or keeps connecting and disconnecting | Cable, adapter or charging port problem |
| Won't go past one level even with protections off and the phone cool | Possible battery or charging fault |
When it is a fault
If none of the settings explain it, work through these checks:
- Turn optimization off (or set the limit to 100%) and let the phone cool.
- Try a different cable and power adapter you know are good.
- Restart the phone.
- Look into the charging port with a flashlight. Lint packed in the bottom can cause a poor connection. Don't dig with metal; see our charging port fixes for safe options.
- Check Settings › Battery › Battery Health (or Battery Health & Charging) for the maximum capacity and any service message.
A battery that shows a service message, drains quickly, or shuts down unexpectedly may be due for a battery replacement. If charging cuts in and out no matter which cable you use, the port itself may need attention. Our phone battery guide explains the signs in more depth.

Frequently asked questions
Is it bad to charge my iPhone to 100%?
Charging to 100% now and then is fine. What adds wear is sitting at full charge for long periods, especially when warm. That's why iOS holds at 80% overnight. If you need a full charge for a long day, go ahead.
Should I turn off Optimized Battery Charging?
Most people should leave it on, because it reduces battery wear without changing how you use the phone. Turn it off only if your schedule is irregular and you keep waking up to a phone that hasn't finished charging.
Why does my iPhone say charging is on hold?
Usually Optimized Battery Charging is waiting to finish charging closer to when you normally unplug, or the battery is too warm. Touch and hold the notification to charge now, or let the phone cool down out of its case.
