Which Galaxy phones have curved screens?
For years, Samsung's flagship phones used "edge" displays, where the glass curves down over the sides of the phone. More recently Samsung moved back to flat screens. Knowing which you have tells you a lot about how it breaks and how it's repaired.
| Screen shape | Galaxy models (examples) |
|---|---|
| Strongly curved | Galaxy S7 edge, S8 and S8+, S9 and S9+, S10 and S10+, Note8 to Note10+, Note20 Ultra, S21 Ultra, S22 Ultra |
| Slightly curved | Galaxy S20 series, S23 Ultra |
| Flat | Galaxy S10e, S21 and S21+, S22 and S22+, S23 and S23+, the S24 and S25 series (including the Ultras), FE models and the Galaxy A series |
Note that the Galaxy S25 Edge, despite the name, has a flat screen. To check your model, go to Settings › About phone.
Why curved screens break differently
On a curved Galaxy, the glass itself forms the sides of the phone. On a flat one, the metal frame wraps around the screen and takes most side impacts. That one design difference shapes how each type gets damaged:
- Side drops hit glass. A curved phone that lands on its edge often cracks along the curve, where the glass is under the most stress.
- Small edge cracks spread. A chip on a curved edge tends to grow across the screen over time.
- Display damage from edge hits. Galaxy screens are AMOLED panels bonded to the glass, so an edge impact can cause black spots, coloured lines or dead touch areas along the side, even if the crack looks small.
- Flat screens sit protected. On a flat Galaxy, the frame usually stands slightly above the glass, so edge drops are more likely to scuff the frame than crack the screen.
Screen protectors: fit is the hard part
Protecting a curved screen is trickier than protecting a flat one.
On curved screens
- Tempered glass that only sticks around the edges can leave a rainbow "halo" or lift at the curves.
- Full-adhesive and UV-glue protectors stick better, but need careful fitting.
- Many "case-friendly" protectors stop short of the curve, leaving the most exposed glass uncovered.
- A thick case can push on the protector's edges and make it lift.
On flat screens
Almost any well-made tempered glass fits edge to edge and works with most cases. That's one of the practical reasons flat screens have become popular again.
On models with an in-display fingerprint sensor, use a protector the maker says is compatible, and re-register your fingerprints after applying it.
How replacement differs
On both types, the glass and the AMOLED display are bonded together, so a cracked front usually means replacing the whole display assembly, not just the glass. Separating the two is specialized work and riskier still on a curved panel. Our Samsung Galaxy repair guide explains the parts involved.
Curved screen replacement
Curved displays are thin at the edges and bonded tightly along the sides. Removing the old screen takes controlled heat and careful separation so the frame and internal parts aren't damaged. Aligning the new curved panel so it sits evenly along both sides takes care too. For many Galaxy models, the replacement screen comes pre-fitted in a new frame, and the technician moves the phone's internal parts across.
Flat screen replacement
Flat screens are generally simpler to fit and seal, with fewer edge-alignment issues. That doesn't make them trivial, but there's less that can go wrong at the sides.
After either repair
- Re-register your fingerprints if your phone uses an in-display sensor.
- Test touch along the edges, especially on curved screens.
- Treat the phone as less water-resistant than when it was new, even with fresh adhesive.
Living with a curved Galaxy
- Choose a case with a raised lip that wraps over the curved edges.
- Turn on Accidental touch protection in display settings if your palm triggers taps along the curves.
- Avoid back pockets, where sitting down flexes the phone and presses on the edges.
- Get small edge chips looked at early, before they spread into the display.

Frequently asked questions
Is it harder to replace a curved Samsung screen?
Generally, yes. Curved screens are thin at the edges and bonded along the sides, so removing the old one and aligning the new one takes more care than a flat screen. The technician will explain what's involved for your model when she quotes.
Does the Galaxy S24 Ultra have a curved screen?
No. The Galaxy S24 Ultra has a flat screen, as do the S25 Ultra and the S25 Edge. The S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra have clearly curved screens, while the S23 Ultra has a slight curve.
Will my fingerprint sensor work after a Samsung screen replacement?
On Galaxy models with an in-display fingerprint sensor, the sensor sits under the screen, so you'll usually need to delete and re-register your fingerprints after the repair. Test it with the technician before she leaves.
