What ghost touch looks like
Ghost touch is when your iPhone acts as if someone is tapping the screen. Apps open by themselves, the keyboard types random letters, pages scroll on their own or the phone starts dialling. It can be constant, or it can come and go.
The cause might be as simple as a dirty screen protector, or it might be a failing display. The good news is that you can rule out the simple causes yourself, in order, before deciding on a repair.
Protect yourself first
A phone that taps by itself can send messages, make calls or change settings without you noticing. While you troubleshoot:
- Lock the screen whenever you set the phone down.
- Set Auto-Lock to a short time in Settings › Display & Brightness › Auto-Lock.
- If the phone still works well enough, back it up now. See how to back up your iPhone before a screen repair.
Step-by-step: rule out the common causes
- Clean the screen and dry your hands. Water droplets, sweat, lotion and grease can register as touches. Wipe the screen with a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth, then dry it.
- Remove the screen protector. Bubbles, dust trapped underneath, a cracked protector or one that doesn't quite fit can press on the display or confuse the touch layer. If the ghost touches stop once it's off, that was your culprit.
- Take off the case. A tight case, or a bumper that squeezes the edges, can put pressure on the screen and trigger touches near the sides.
- Unplug the charger. Ghost touch that happens only while charging often points to a poor-quality or damaged charger or cable, which can create electrical interference. Try a different, good-quality charger and cable and see if it stops.
- Restart the iPhone. A restart clears temporary software glitches. If the screen is too jumpy to use the power-off slider, do a force restart. On iPhone 8 or later, press and quickly release volume up, press and quickly release volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Update iOS. Go to Settings › General › Software Update and install anything available.
- Check touch settings. Look through Settings › Accessibility › Touch for features you may have turned on by accident, and note whether anything there changes the behaviour.
- Reset All Settings. As a last software step, go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings. This resets settings like Wi-Fi passwords, privacy choices and wallpaper, and removes cards from Apple Pay, but it doesn't erase your apps, photos or messages. Avoid "Erase All Content and Settings" unless you're fully backed up and a technician has suggested it.
Water and humidity
If the ghost touch started after rain, a splash or a steamy bathroom, moisture may be inside the display. Don't keep charging or using it heavily. Turn it off, let it dry with the ports facing down, and skip the rice; our post on the wet phone rice myth explains why. If ghost touch continues once it's dry, have the phone checked for liquid damage.
When the display itself needs replacing
If none of the steps above helped, the problem is most likely hardware. These signs point to the display:
| What you notice | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Ghost touch started after a drop, with or without a crack | Damaged touch layer or display connector |
| Touches always happen in the same spot or strip | Damaged area of the display |
| Started after a previous screen replacement | Faulty or poorly fitted replacement screen |
| Screen lifting at an edge, with ghost touch | Swollen battery pressing on the display |
| Continues after protector, case, charger and software checks | Display fault |
A swollen battery needs attention first. If the screen is lifting, stop charging the phone and don't press it back down. Our cracked screen guide covers what else can go wrong with a damaged display and how to decide on a repair.
Can you live with it?
Mild, occasional ghost touch may seem manageable, but it tends to get worse as damage spreads, and accidental calls or messages can be more than an annoyance. If your iPhone is making taps you didn't, it's worth getting it checked before it becomes unusable.

Frequently asked questions
Can a screen protector cause ghost touch on an iPhone?
Yes. Bubbles, trapped dust, a cracked protector or one that doesn't fit properly can cause phantom touches. Remove the protector and use the phone for a while; if the ghost touch stops, replace it with a well-fitting one.
Why does my iPhone ghost touch only while charging?
That usually points to the charger or cable. Poor-quality or damaged chargers can create electrical interference that the touchscreen picks up. Switch to a good-quality charger and cable in good condition and see whether the problem goes away.
Does Reset All Settings delete my photos?
No. Reset All Settings returns settings such as Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper and privacy choices to their defaults and removes Apple Pay cards, but it doesn't remove apps, photos or messages. Erase All Content and Settings is the option that wipes the phone.
