Software flicker or hardware flicker?
The first job is working out whether the flicker comes from software, which you can often fix yourself, or from the display hardware, which usually needs a repair. These clues help:
- Only in one app: probably that app.
- Only at very low brightness: often normal behaviour of OLED screens when dimmed, especially if you're sensitive to it.
- Brightness keeps jumping up and down: likely auto-brightness reacting to changing light.
- Everywhere, including the lock screen and startup logo: leans toward hardware.
- Started right after a drop or getting wet: almost certainly hardware.
- Comes with lines, colour shifts or touch problems: the display is damaged.
Try the screenshot test. Take a screenshot while the screen is flickering, then view it on another device. If the screenshot looks normal, the problem is likely in the physical display, not the software creating the image.
Fixes to try first
1. Turn off auto-brightness
Auto-brightness adjusts the screen as the light around you changes. Under flickering indoor lights or in shifting sun, it can look like the screen is flickering.
- iPhone: Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Auto-Brightness.
- Samsung and Pixel: turn off Adaptive brightness in Settings › Display.
Test the phone in steady light. If the flicker stops, you can leave it off, or turn it back on knowing what causes it.
2. Change the refresh rate
Many phones switch between refresh rates to save battery, and some apps don't handle the switch smoothly.
- iPhone Pro models with ProMotion: turn on Limit Frame Rate in Settings › Accessibility › Motion.
- Samsung: go to Settings › Display › Motion smoothness and try Standard.
- Pixel: turn off Smooth Display in your display settings.
3. Check other display features
Night Shift, True Tone, Eye comfort shield, extra dim and dark mode change how the screen looks. Toggle them off one at a time to see if any of them line up with the flicker.
4. Update or reinstall the problem app
If flicker only appears in one app, such as a video player or game, update it from the app store. If that doesn't help, delete and reinstall it.
5. Restart and update the phone
A restart clears temporary display glitches. Then check for system updates in your phone's software update settings, since display bugs are often fixed in updates.
6. Try safe mode on Android
Safe mode starts the phone with only its built-in apps. On most Samsung and Pixel phones, open the power menu, then touch and hold Power off until the safe mode option appears. If the flicker disappears in safe mode, a third-party app is the cause. Restart normally to exit.
7. Swap the charger
If the screen only flickers while plugged in, try a different cable and charger. A faulty charger can cause odd screen behaviour.
Flickering after a drop
A drop can damage the display panel or loosen the connection between the screen and the phone's internals, even when the glass looks intact. Flicker after an impact often gets worse, and it can turn into lines, black patches or a screen that stops working.
If this is what you're seeing, back up your phone now while the screen still works. Don't press on the display to "fix" the flicker. Pressing can damage it further.
One more thing to check: if the screen is lifting at an edge or there's a new gap, a swollen battery might be pushing on it. Stop charging the phone and have it looked at.
When the display needs replacing
Replacement is usually the answer when the flicker:
- appears in every app and on the lock screen
- doesn't show up in screenshots
- started after a drop, pressure or liquid exposure
- comes with lines, discoloured areas or unresponsive touch
- continues after all the software fixes above
A screen replacement swaps the display assembly, which includes the panel that shows the image and the layer that senses touch. Our cracked screen guide explains replacement screen options and what to expect.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my phone screen flickering?
The most common causes are auto-brightness reacting to changing light, refresh rate switching, a buggy app or a software glitch. If the flicker appears everywhere, started after a drop or comes with lines or colour changes, the display itself is likely damaged.
Can a software update fix screen flickering?
Sometimes. If the flicker is caused by a bug, updating the phone or the affected app can fix it. Updates won't help if the display panel or its connection was damaged by a drop or liquid.
How do I know if screen flicker is hardware?
Take a screenshot while it's flickering and view it on another device. If the screenshot looks normal, the flicker is likely in the physical display. Flicker after a drop, or alongside lines or dead touch areas, also points to hardware.
