Software or hardware? Start here
When a Google Pixel camera stops working, the cause is usually one of two things: a software problem (the camera app, an update, another app grabbing the camera) or a hardware problem (a cracked lens, a damaged camera module or a loose connection after a drop). Software fixes are free and you can try them yourself, so work through those first.
A quick way to tell which you're facing:
- Black screen or "Camera failed" / "Camera keeps stopping" after an update or with no drop: often software.
- Only one lens fails (for example, zoom or ultrawide), or the camera clicks, shakes or shows a blank feed after a drop: more likely hardware.
- Hazy, foggy or streaky photos with a visible chip in the camera bar glass: the lens cover is damaged.
- Front camera works but the rear doesn't (or the reverse): points to that specific camera module.
Fixes to try, in order
- Restart the phone. Open the power menu (on recent Pixels, press Power and Volume up together) and tap Restart. It clears a lot of one-off glitches.
- Close other apps that use the camera. Video calling, QR scanner, banking and social apps can hold onto the camera. Close them, then reopen the camera.
- Check the flashlight. If the flashlight is on in Quick Settings, turn it off and try again.
- Clear the camera app's cache. Go to Settings › Apps, open the full app list, choose Pixel Camera, then Storage & cache › Clear cache. This doesn't delete your photos.
- Check camera permissions. In Settings › Security & privacy › Privacy controls, make sure camera access isn't switched off. You'll also find the camera access toggle in Quick Settings on many Pixels.
- Update everything. Check Settings › System › Software updates, then update the Pixel Camera app in the Play Store. Camera bugs are often fixed in updates.
- Try safe mode. Open the power menu, then touch and hold Restart or Power off until the safe mode prompt appears, and tap OK. Safe mode turns off downloaded apps. If the camera works there, a recently installed app is the likely culprit.
Clearing storage (rather than cache) for the camera app resets its settings. It doesn't delete photos in Google Photos or your gallery, but check your backup before you try it anyway.
What "Camera failed" usually means
On a Pixel, "Camera failed" or a blank viewfinder means the app couldn't talk to the camera hardware. After the steps above, if the error comes back every time on every lens, there's a good chance the problem is the camera module or its connector rather than the app.
One more test: open a different camera app, like the camera inside a video calling app. If that also fails, it's very likely hardware. If it works there but not in Pixel Camera, it's more likely an app or update issue.
Cracked camera bar or lens cover
The camera bar on recent Pixels is a big, raised target. If the glass over a lens is cracked or chipped, you might see:
- Haze or glare, especially in bright light or at night.
- Soft focus in one part of the image.
- Rainbow streaks or flare around lights.
- Dust or moisture getting in behind the glass over time.
A cracked lens cover can sometimes be replaced on its own, without touching the camera module. If the camera behind it was also damaged by the impact, the module needs replacing too. A technician can usually tell which after opening the phone and testing each lens.
When it's the camera module
Each Pixel has separate camera modules for the front, main, ultrawide and (on Pro models) telephoto lenses. A drop can damage one module and leave the rest working. Signs include a single lens that won't switch on, a constant buzzing or clicking from the stabilization, or a feed that's black, green or frozen.
Module repairs mean opening the phone, so they're a job for a technician. Water damage can also cause camera faults, so mention any spills when you ask for a quote.
Before you book a repair
- Back up your photos to Google Photos or a computer.
- Note which lenses fail, and when the problem started.
- Take a screenshot of any error message.
- Find your exact model in Settings › About phone.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Pixel say Camera failed?
It means the camera app couldn't connect to the camera hardware. Restart, close other apps using the camera, clear the Pixel Camera cache and update. If the error appears on every lens and in other apps too, the camera module or its connector is likely damaged.
Will clearing the Pixel Camera cache delete my photos?
No. Clearing the cache only removes temporary files the app uses. Your photos stay in Google Photos and your gallery. Clearing storage resets the camera app's settings, so back up first if you go that far.
Can a cracked Pixel camera lens be fixed?
Often, yes. If only the glass cover over the lens is cracked, it can sometimes be replaced alone. If the impact damaged the camera module underneath, the module is replaced too. A technician can test each lens to confirm.
