What controller drift looks like
Drift is when your character, cursor or camera moves on its own while you aren't touching the stick. It often starts small, like a slow camera pan in menus, then gets worse. It can affect the left stick, the right stick or both.
Each DualSense thumbstick sits on a small analog module that measures how far and in which direction you push it. Over time, the internal contacts wear, and dust or grime can work in around the base. Either one can make the module report a slight tilt when the stick is centred.
Confirm it's the controller
- Test more than one game. If drift only appears in one title, check that game's settings first.
- Try a second controller if you have one. If it behaves normally, the problem is the first controller.
- Use a gamepad tester. Connect the controller to a computer by USB and open a browser-based gamepad tester. A centred stick should read at or very near zero on both axes.
Fixes to try first
1. Update the controller software
Sony releases updates for the DualSense. On your PS5, go to Settings › Accessories › Controllers and look for the wireless controller device software option. Connect the controller with a USB cable while it updates. Keep the PS5 system software current too.
2. Reset the controller
- Turn off the PS5.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller, near the left shoulder buttons.
- Gently press the button inside with a thin, blunt tool such as a SIM-eject pin and hold it for about five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable and press the PS button.
A reset clears pairing and software glitches. It won't fix physical wear, but it's a quick way to rule out a software cause.
3. Clean around the stick
With the controller off, push the stick fully to one side and give a few short bursts of compressed air around the base, then rotate the stick and repeat. Rolling the stick in full circles a few times afterwards can help dislodge debris. Don't pour or spray liquids into the controller, and don't pry the stick cap off.
What about calibration and dead zones?
Unlike some older consoles, the PS5 has no system-wide stick calibration tool. Your options are limited:
- In-game dead zone settings. Many shooters and sports games let you raise the stick dead zone, so small unwanted readings are ignored. This can hide mild drift, but it also reduces fine aiming and makes controls feel less responsive.
- DualSense Edge profiles. The Edge controller supports adjustable dead zones in its custom profiles, and Sony sells replacement stick modules for it that you can swap yourself.
Dead zones are a workaround, not a fix. If you keep raising them, the module is wearing out.
Repair options
| Option | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer coverage | If the controller is still covered by Sony, check your eligibility first. |
| Stick module replacement | On a standard DualSense, the stick modules are soldered to the main board. A technician desolders the worn module, installs a new one and tests it. |
| Swappable modules (Edge only) | The DualSense Edge is designed for user-replaceable stick modules. |
| Replace the controller | Worth considering if the controller also has a failing battery, sticky triggers or a damaged charging port. |
Replacing a soldered module isn't a beginner job. It involves opening the shell, disconnecting the internal battery and ribbon cables, and careful soldering on a small board. Ask your technician which module options are available for your controller.
How to slow drift down
- Wash and dry your hands before long sessions, especially after snacks.
- Store controllers in a drawer or stand away from dust and pet hair.
- Don't press down hard on the sticks or rest the controller face down on them.
- Avoid dropping the controller, which can shift the module.
When to call a technician
If drift survives an update, a reset and cleaning, the stick module is likely worn. A certified woman technician from Woman Wireless On The Go can come to your home in our service area, check the controller, give you a free quote before any work starts and test it with you afterwards, ideally in the game you actually play. Find out more on our game console repair page, or call or WhatsApp (365) 351-4247.

Frequently asked questions
Can PS5 controller drift be fixed?
Yes. Mild drift sometimes improves after a controller update, a reset and cleaning around the stick. Persistent drift usually means a worn analog stick module, which a technician can replace by desoldering the old module and fitting a new one.
Does the PS5 have a joystick calibration setting?
No. The PS5 doesn't include a system-wide stick calibration tool. Many games offer dead zone settings that can hide mild drift, and the DualSense Edge supports adjustable dead zones in its profiles, but neither repairs a worn stick.
How do I reset a PS5 controller?
Turn off the PS5, then press the button inside the small hole on the back of the controller with a thin, blunt tool such as a SIM-eject pin for about five seconds. Reconnect with a USB cable and press the PS button.
