What the message is
Newer iPhones keep a record of certain replaced parts. When a part such as the screen, battery or camera has been replaced, iOS checks whether it can verify the part as a new Apple part that's been set up for that specific phone. If it can't, the phone shows a notice that it's unable to verify the part, and lists it as an Unknown Part.
It's an information notice, not an error. It doesn't mean the repair failed or that the part is faulty. It means the phone can't confirm where the part came from.
Where to find it: Parts and Service History
Go to Settings › General › About. If any parts have been replaced, you'll see a Parts and Service History section. If the phone has never had a tracked part replaced, the section doesn't appear at all.
Inside, each replaced part is listed with a status. In general terms:
- A part Apple has verified as genuine is labelled that way, usually with the date of service.
- Unknown Part means iOS couldn't verify it. This is typical of third-party parts, and can also appear for an Apple part taken from another iPhone or one that wasn't set up through Apple's process.
- Used may appear for an Apple part that was previously installed in a different iPhone.
When a part can't be verified, you'll also usually see a notice on the lock screen for a short time after the repair, then in Settings for a while, before it settles into Parts and Service History.
Which parts are tracked depends on your model and iOS version. Recent iPhones track more parts than older ones.
What it means for each part
Display
Your iPhone works normally for calls, apps, photos and everything else. Depending on the model, the screen and how it was installed, some display features may behave differently. True Tone, which adjusts colour to your surroundings, is the one most often affected. Ask your technician what to expect for your model and part before the repair.
Battery
The phone charges and runs as usual. On some models, the battery health readout in Settings › Battery may be limited or unavailable with an unverified battery, so you can't rely on it to track wear the same way.
Camera
The camera works for photos and video. The notice is informational. Image quality depends on the quality of the part itself, which is a good reason to ask your technician about part options.
Face ID and Touch ID
These are a special case. Biometric sensors are tied closely to the phone's own hardware for security, so they're handled differently from other parts. If your repair involves the Face ID camera system or a Touch ID button, ask before booking what will and won't work afterward.
What it doesn't mean
- It doesn't stop the phone working. Calls, texts, apps, updates and backups all carry on as normal.
- It doesn't block iOS updates. You can keep updating your iPhone.
- It's not a sign of a bad repair by itself. A quality third-party part can perform well and still show the notice.
- It can't be hidden or removed. The entry stays in Parts and Service History. If you sell the phone later, a buyer can see it, so be upfront.
Questions to ask before a repair
A good technician will explain your options instead of leaving you to discover a notice later. Before you book, ask:
- What part options are available for my model, and how do they differ in display quality or battery capacity?
- Will I see a notice in Settings afterward?
- Will any features, like True Tone or battery health readings, be affected for my model?
- Will Face ID or Touch ID be affected by this repair?
- Can I test everything with you before you leave?

Bought a used iPhone and found this notice?
It simply tells you the phone had a repair. Check that the screen, battery and camera work properly, and factor the repair history into what you pay. If anything else feels off, like a lack of True Tone or a battery that drains quickly, ask the seller about the repair.

Frequently asked questions
Does an Unknown Part message affect how my iPhone works?
For everyday use, no. Calls, apps, photos and software updates work normally. Depending on the part and model, some features such as True Tone or battery health readings may behave differently, so ask your technician beforehand.
Can I remove the Unknown Part notice from my iPhone?
No. The entry stays in Settings › General › About › Parts and Service History. The lock screen and Settings notices fade after a while, but the history remains, and a future buyer can see it.
Where do I check my iPhone's repair history?
Open Settings › General › About. If any tracked parts have been replaced, a Parts and Service History section appears, listing each replaced part and its status. If the section isn't there, no tracked parts have been replaced.
