Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold: Screen Care Tips

By Woman Wireless On The Go ·

Caring for a Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold screen comes down to leaving the factory inner screen protector in place, keeping grit off the inner display before you close it, opening it gently in cold weather and cleaning the hinge with a soft dry brush. Woman Wireless On The Go can check anything that looks off.

Why foldable screens need different care

A Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold has two very different screens. The cover screen on the outside is toughened glass, much like any other Samsung phone. The big inner screen is built to bend, so it uses ultra-thin glass under a flexible plastic top layer.

That flexible top layer is softer than regular phone glass. A fingernail, a grain of sand or a key in the same pocket can leave a mark that a normal screen would shrug off. A lot of foldable damage comes from small daily habits rather than big drops, which is good news: habits are easy to change.

Leave the factory inner screen protector alone

Every Z Flip and Z Fold leaves the factory with a protector already applied to the inner screen. It looks like an ordinary film you could peel off, but it's part of how the folding display is designed to hold up. Samsung's own guidance is not to remove it yourself.

  • Don't pick at a lifted corner. Peeling it back can pull at the layers underneath and expose the soft display surface.
  • Don't stack a store-bought film on top unless it's made for your exact model and for the inner screen specifically.
  • Bubbles along the crease are common as the protector ages. If it starts lifting or bubbling, have it looked at and replaced properly rather than trimming or peeling it.

Living with the crease

Every folding screen has a visible crease. You'll see it at an angle and feel it under your finger, and that's normal. It doesn't mean the screen is damaged or getting worse.

What isn't normal is a crease that changes. Watch for:

  • A thin bright, black or coloured line running along the fold
  • A strip along the fold where touch stops responding
  • The crease turning into a sharp ridge or a dent you can catch a nail on
  • The protector bubbling or separating right at the fold

To keep the fold healthy, open and close the phone with even pressure on both halves. Don't flick it open one-handed against your palm, don't force it past where it naturally stops, and don't press hard on the crease with a fingertip or stylus. If you use a stylus on a Fold, use only one designed for your model; the Flip's inner screen isn't made for one at all.

Keep pocket debris out of the fold

Older Flip and Fold models close with a small gap at the hinge end. Newer models close flat, but grit sitting on the inner screen when you snap it shut still gets pressed into that soft surface. Galaxy Z phones are not rated as dust-tight, so fine sand and lint can also work into the hinge area.

  • Give the phone its own pocket, away from keys, coins and lip balm tubes.
  • After the beach, a worksite or a sandbox, glance at the inner screen before you close it.
  • Wipe the inner screen with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, using light pressure and no cleaning sprays.
  • If you hear crunching or feel grit when folding, stop and clean it before closing again.

Folding in cold weather

Ontario winters are hard on foldables. The flexible layers of the inner screen stiffen in the cold, and Samsung advises care when using foldables in very low temperatures.

  • Carry the phone in an inside coat pocket rather than an outer one or a bag.
  • If it's been sitting in a cold car or outside for a while, let it warm up to room temperature before you open it fully.
  • Don't speed things up with a heater, hair dryer or car vent. Sudden heat can cause condensation inside the phone.
  • Use the cover screen for quick tasks outdoors so the inner screen stays folded.

How to clean the hinge safely

The hinge collects pocket lint over time. A gentle clean every so often keeps it moving smoothly.

  1. Power the phone off and take it out of its case.
  2. With the phone closed, brush along the outside of the hinge with a soft, dry, clean brush, such as a new soft toothbrush or a makeup brush.
  3. Open it partway and brush along the hinge edges, always sweeping away from the inner screen.
  4. Wipe the frame and cover screen with a dry microfibre cloth.
  5. Check inside the case for trapped grit and clean it before putting the phone back in.

Skip liquids, pins, toothpicks and canned air blasted into the hinge. Those can push debris deeper or damage the screen edge.

Choosing a case for a Flip or Fold

A good foldable case protects both halves without touching the inner screen. Look for:

  • Coverage on both halves, plus hinge protection if your model has a case option for it
  • A raised lip around the cover screen and the camera bump
  • No adhesive strips or edges that wrap onto the inner display
  • A fit that doesn't stop the phone from closing fully

Take the case off now and then. Grit trapped between a case and the frame acts like sandpaper.

Signs it's time for a repair

Book a look if the inner protector is lifting, a line or dark patch appears along the fold, the cover screen is cracked, or the hinge feels loose, stiff or won't hold its angle. Catching these early often means less extra damage. Our Samsung Galaxy repair guide covers how Galaxy repairs work in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the screen protector on my Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip?

No. The inner screen protector is applied at the factory and is part of how the folding display is designed to hold up. Samsung advises against removing it yourself. If it's bubbling or lifting, have it replaced properly instead of peeling it.

Is the crease on my Galaxy Z Flip a sign of damage?

A visible crease you can see at an angle and feel with your finger is normal on every foldable. Get it checked if a line, dark patch or dead touch strip appears along the fold, or if the protector starts separating there.

Is it safe to open a Galaxy Z Fold in the cold?

The inner screen's flexible layers stiffen in the cold, so be gentle. If the phone has been outside or in a cold car, let it warm up to room temperature before opening it fully, and never warm it with a heater or vent.
