Green tint and lines are two different problems
When a Pixel screen starts looking wrong, it usually shows up in one of two ways. A green tint is a colour cast, often most obvious on dark grey backgrounds at low brightness. Lines are sharp vertical or horizontal stripes, sometimes green, pink, white or black, that stay in the same place no matter what's on screen.
A faint tint can sometimes be a quirk of how OLED panels behave at very low brightness, or a software issue. Solid lines that appeared after a drop, pressure or water are almost always hardware. The steps below help you tell which you have.
Step 1: Take a screenshot
This simple test separates software from hardware faster than anything else.
- Take a screenshot while the tint or lines are visible.
- Open that screenshot on another phone or a computer.
- If the lines or tint show up in the screenshot, the phone is drawing them, so it's likely software. If the screenshot looks normal on the other device, the problem is in the display itself.
Step 2: Play with brightness and display settings
A green tint that only appears at the very bottom of the brightness slider, on dark screens, is common on OLED panels. Try these:
- Raise the brightness a little. If the tint disappears above a certain level, it's likely a low-brightness characteristic rather than damage.
- Turn off Adaptive brightness temporarily to see whether automatic changes are triggering it.
- Toggle Smooth Display in Display settings. Switching the refresh rate behaviour can reduce flicker or tint at low brightness on some models.
- Check Extra dim, colour correction and Night Light. These change how colours look and are easy to forget about. Turn them off to test.
- Try a different colour setting in Display settings, such as Natural or Adaptive.
Step 3: Update your software
Google regularly fixes display bugs, including tint and flicker issues, in system updates. Go to Settings › System › Software updates and install anything available. Also update your apps from the Play Store, since a misbehaving app can cause odd colours or flickering.
It's also worth searching Google's Pixel support site for your exact model. Google has run extended repair programs for specific Pixel display issues in the past, and if one applies to your phone, that's worth knowing before you pay for anything.
Step 4: Try safe mode
Safe mode starts the phone with only its built-in apps, which rules out third-party apps such as screen filters, blue-light apps or launchers.
- Open the power menu (on most recent Pixels, press the power and volume up buttons together).
- Touch and hold Restart until the reboot to safe mode prompt appears, then tap OK.
- Use the phone for a while. If the tint or lines are gone, an app you installed is the likely cause. Uninstall recent apps one at a time.
- Restart normally to leave safe mode.
Signs it's display damage
If you've worked through the steps above and the problem remains, look for these signs of hardware failure:
- Lines that don't appear in screenshots
- Lines that started right after a drop, a squeeze in a pocket or a spill
- Tint that changes when you press gently near the edge of the screen
- Patches of discolouration, black spots or areas that spread over days or weeks
- Touch not responding in the same area as the lines
- Any crack, even a small one at a corner
OLED displays are layered and sealed together. A single line can mean a damaged connection inside the panel, and it rarely goes away on its own. Often more lines appear over time, or the screen eventually stops displaying at all.
What replacement involves
On Pixel phones, the OLED panel, touch layer and front glass are one assembly. When the display is damaged, the whole assembly is replaced, not just one layer. A good repair also checks that the fingerprint sensor under the screen works properly afterward, since it sits beneath the display on most recent Pixels.
Before any repair, back up your phone if it still works. Recent Pixel models also have a Repair mode in System settings that lets a technician test the phone without access to your personal data. Our repair guides cover more about preparing for a repair.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Pixel screen look green at low brightness?
OLED panels can show a slight colour cast at the lowest brightness levels, especially on dark grey backgrounds. Raising brightness a little, toggling Smooth Display and updating software often helps. If the tint is getting worse or appears at all brightness levels, it may be hardware.
Can a software update fix lines on a Pixel screen?
Only if the lines are software-related. If they show up in a screenshot, an update or safe mode may fix them. Lines that don't appear in screenshots are almost always physical display damage that needs a replacement screen.
Will lines on my Pixel screen get worse?
Often, yes. Lines caused by display damage tend to multiply or spread over time, and the screen can eventually stop working. Back up your phone now and have the display checked sooner rather than later.
